Map to the Morning
Map to the Morning

Won’t you come with me
Through sapphire skies and diamond eyes
To Tranquility
Where the mermaids play
At the side of the bay
What do you think you’ll find
If you trade in an eye
To be king in the land of the blind ?
I want to see
Atlantis serene
In aquamarine
Open your eyes and I’ll make out
A map to the morning
Open your mind and I’ll build
A bridge to the sky
Open your eyes and I'll make out
A map to the morning
In a land where the unicorn run
The phoenix still flies to the sun
Somewhere to dance
Beneath a snowdrift of stars
Tell me where would you rather be
Just stuck in the Smoke
Or seduced by the sound of the sea ?
I want to feel
That what’s here is the dream
And what’s there isn’t real
Which is the priceless find
Large nugget of gold
Or a small piece of mind ?
I want to try
To recall how to laugh
And forget how to cry
Open your eyes and I’ll make out
A map to the morning
Open your mind and I’ll build
A bridge to the sky
Open your eyes and I'll make out
A map to the morning
I’m sure we could slip away soon
I’ll meet you out under the moon
We can slip off our shoes
Sign our souls in the sand
Open your eyes and I’ll make out
A map to the morning
Open your mind and I’ll build
A bridge to the sky
Open your eyes and I'll make out
A map to the morning
In a land where the unicorn run
The phoenix still flies to the sun
Somewhere to dance
Beneath a snowdrift of stars
Open your eyes and I'll make out
That map to the morning
Open your mind and I'll build
A bridge to the sky
Open your eyes and I'll make out
That map to the morning
I'm so sure we could slip away soon
I'll meet you out under the moon
Slip off our shoes
Sign our souls in the sand

What's the song about?

Of all the songs I have ever written there are very few I really can't explain. I am not in the habit of writing love songs - So this one presents it's own challenge in personal interpretation..
It is a love song - and it IS about a lady who was the love of my life. No disrespect to much loved previous partners but - at the time I wrote this - she was the love of my life.
At the time I wrote it we were still getting to know each other (having met through an internet poetry site - true!)

So i suppose it was a courtship song. "Won't you come with me through sapphire skies and diamond eyes" was a reference to words we used as poets. It was an invitation - "Leave the old life that is dragging you down and come take a new chance... with me!"
It is a song about absolute total love for someone. And within that mutual happiness you can find the same feelings in pure joy that revert you back to happier times of innocence and in believing in "magic" all over again - at the same times as realising it IS just a fantasy and will never last in the cold light of day with bills to pay.
But..the time you can slip away from the practicalities of the world - however fleeting..with a soulmate...are moments that you will remember ..forever...
